Eugene Mission: ‘Everything is completely different in this kitchen’

January, 24, 2017

EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene Mission has been working on a new kitchen since a fire destroyed their former one in June. Saturday, they opened their new facility to the public.

Workers say the fire in June was started by poor handling of greasy towels.

After mourning the loss of the old kitchen, Mission workers and volunteers are now looking forward to the new, top-of-the-line cooking equipment.

“Everything is completely different in this kitchen. We have a conveyer dishwasher. We used to have a single-load dishwasher. We added a lot of more quantity-style cooking devices that will both benefit less lifting and bending. It will help us create more foods,” said Marshall Eck, food service director at the Eugene Mission.

The kitchen will feed more than 800 people a day and will serve all types of meals throughout the week.

The new kitchen was unveiled on Christmas Day, but the finishing touches weren’t revealed until Saturday.
